Example text

I won’t have to give up reviewing theatre to take care of him: I’ll just review more kids’ theatre so I can bring him. I already read young adult novels, so I’ll have lots of books to give him when he gets to that age. Or maybe he won’t like books and theatre and instead he’ll like cars and sports, and we will have to find people to do that sort of stuff with him. But we can do that. There are people with all kinds of interests in our social networks, and we are not afraid to ask for help. The fact is that the future is unknowable—always has been, always will be.

We partied and went to concerts and movies and the theatre. We had political debates and weekends in Montreal. We spent a month travelling in Europe. It was comfortable but never boring. When we argued, we worked it out afterward. We knew how to apologize; we knew how to give each other space. We were in love. And then we had been together for four years. What were we going to do about this pesky difference in opinion about having children? She started attending co-parenting meetings at a local LGBT 42 b dorianne emmerton community centre.

I have a day job that I don’t hate and it pays the bills. I’m working on my writing and getting short stories published here and there, some of them even resulting in sums of money (albeit smallish sums). I have two ongoing unpaid gigs: one reviewing theatre and one hosting a radio show about sex. That doesn’t leave much time for a child. But I’m dating an amazing woman who always wanted to have a baby (for the sake of her privacy, I’ll refer to her as The Girlfriend). The relationship happened by accident.
