While my theory of rule does not lead to a wholesale rejection of liberalism or democracy, I critically incorporate particular elements of both political traditions in order to construct a more adequate normative account of rule.

This understanding can then lead to actions that are viewed as abusive by those whose interests are ignored or overtly rejected in the process. Therefore, in the final section of the chapter I track three basic clusters of concepts that help explain this behavior and the competitive nature of Homeric rule: rage or anger; contest and competition; honor, glory or fame, and reputation. These conceptual clusters expose primary characteristics of the distinction process, all of which highlight the relative disconnectedness between rulers and their impulse to rule over others.

In contrast, a multiple methods approach seems most appropriate for historical-​comparative studies, especially given the cross-​disciplinary nature and scope that such studies will often involve. For example, examining ancient Greek and Indian political thought requires engaging with scholarship and methodologies in • I n t r o d u c t i o n 6 multiple fields and disciplines. This cross-​disciplinary, methodological pluralism helps strengthen my own analyses of Greek and Indian works, and I do not foresee how any particular method would be justified in claiming authority over all others.
